This morning we ventured out to see the UNESCO World Heritage site Serra de Tramuntana and take a hike down a few scenic paths. We wish we had more time to devote to a much longer hike but at least we got to skip the silly outfits and backpacks. We started in the quiet town of Esporles and took a stone path for a couple of hours, winding up the side of a mountain. The path runs alongside farms most of the way, and when you get most of the way to the top, you get a glimpse of the valley and other mountains.
Silvery olive trees were in abundance!
Since we only had the car for 24 hours and it'd be our one chance to see the other side of the island, we decided to take a drive through some small towns on our way to Manacor. There wasn't really anything of note to take a picture of but I did wish I had snapped a picture of the "salad" Jay ordered for lunch. It turned out to be a blob of cheese, a few slices of tomatoes and about a fourth cup of olive oil. So far vegetables and leaves don't seem to be a big thing here.
When I told my mom we were going to Mallorca she wanted me to look for her favorite tennis player, Rafael Nadal. Since Manacor is his hometown and the location of his sports complex, we stopped at the Rafael Nadal Experience to pick something up for her at the gift shop. Unfortunately it was mostly corporate-looking gifts (notebooks, pens, coffee mugs).
A few weeks before leaving for Catalonia, Jay searched for some local bands to listen to, hoping to catch at least one live. Our favorite by far was Guineu, and we were thrilled to find out she'd be playing in Palma at Es Gremi. The show was incredible!! She said it was her first time playing in Mallorca, she had been to the venue before as a teen and had dreamed of playing here one day.
