Ukraine! Day 5: Kosiv

Kosiv! We were planning on this being the highlight of our trip, and even though our vacation isn't over yet, I think it will be hard to beat visiting this Hutsul village in the Carpathian mountains. We were only able to spend half a day here but we managed to get a lot in. When you arrive in Kosiv it's a bit of a walk from the main area to the bazaar. It's not difficult to find because cars are lined up for about half a mile to get to it.

The main attraction, at least for us, was getting to see some of the Petrykivka paintings. Petrykivka is a decorative style unique to Ukraine. In 2013 it was inscribed to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists because of its significance.

We bought a decorative plate directly from the artist, a wool rug, and a couple of small things.

We spent a lot of time walking up and down the stalls of the bazaar and when we decided we definitely could not fit more stuff in our bag, we headed back to the main square. I had my bag and Jay had his rug.

We had a little time before catching a ride back to Kolomyya so we stopped in the local Hutsul museum. It's easy to see as many museums as you want here since they're usually closer to $2 instead of $20!

This afternoon we caught a train from Kolomyya to Lviv. The trip was about 4.5 hours and fairly uncomfortable because of no air circulation at all. There are only a few stops between Kolomyya and Lviv and those weren't enough to get some air when doors opened. We were so glad to finally arrive so we could grab a quick bite for dinner and head to our castle for the night. More on the castle tomorrow!
