Iceland! Day 4: Reykjavík

Our last day in Iceland. This trip went by way too fast. We got up early once again so we'd have time to see as much as we could.

We started with the Settlement Exhibition (which I forgot to take a picture of...) It contains ruins of the foundation of one of the earliest houses in Iceland and other artifacts from the area. Admission to the Exhibition also includes entry to the oldest house in Reykjavík, now a museum with an exhibit of photographs from 1918, an important year for Icelanders.

We also passed by Landakotsskóli, one of the oldest schools in Iceland and one of my favorite buildings I've seen on this trip.

A couple of random pictures on our walk:

For lunch we visited Iceland's oldest restaurant, Kaffivagninn. It's located in the Old Harbor area, which as it turns out, was one of my favorite areas of the city. I also had my second favorite Iceland meal there: Plokkfiskur, fish stew with rye bread. It's not something I'd normally order but I'm so glad I did!

Possibly my favorite spot in Reykjavík: the botanical garden on the East side of the city. I don't remember seeing it listed on any website but we were going to be in the area and decided to stop by. Pictures don't do the place justice. It's a massive area with various gardens, an arboretum and a restaurant. If you're visiting during the summer, you must stop by the garden. It's an easy walk from the city center (about an hour down the main street with lots of things to see on the way).

The restaurant in the garden is located in a greenhouse. It's full of plants you wouldn't expect to find in Iceland: olives, grapes, figs, wisteria, and much more. They offer a happy hour in the evening so we stopped in for a drink before heading back to the city center.

And that concludes our vacation to Iceland. It was an unforgettable experience and we hope to see it again. Anyone wanting to visit, I think you'll enjoy it. Just get away from the main tourist areas and enjoy the island.
