Bulgaria! Day 5: Shipka Pass, Veliko Tarnovo

The morning started by heading north of Plovdiv through the Valley of the Thracian Kings, home to 1,000 mounds. We visited three tombs: Griffins, Helvetia and Shushmanets.

One of the things I was most excited to see in Bulgaria was the drive through Shipka Pass.  There are spots where you can look out and see only trees and mountains in every direction. A few areas of the drive were a bit scary but for the most part it wasn't too bad. I drove up the mountain and Jay drove us down.

Once you reach the general area of the Shipka Monument, the fun really begins! You start by parking your car and climbing up several hundred steps...676 to be exact.

And when you finally feel you've accomplished something, you look up and see even more stairs. The climb is worth it for the view.

Shipka Monument is a memorial to the fallen Bulgarians and Russians during the battles of Shipka.

A little further on is a spot called Eagle's Nest, named for the area held by Russian troops during the battle of 1878.

North of Shipka Pass we visited the small village of Arbanasi and then made our way to the old streets of Veliko Tarnovo. Veliko follows the bends of the Yantra river and offers many great views.

Our first evening in Veliko we had dinner at Ego Pizza and Grill. It was recommended to us because it has one of the best views in the city. I have to agree with that assessment! This was the view from our window seat:
