Bulgaria! Day 2-3: Plovdiv

The next morning we rented a car. We received our international driving permits the month before. Neither of us have driven outside North America before so we decided to give it a try. There were several areas we wanted to visit that we wouldn't have been able to if we relied solely on public transportation. We only had one sanfu (more on that later!)

You can quickly see why Plovdiv was chosen to be the European Capital of Culture for 2019. Everywhere you look there's a mixture of art, history, music, and lots of good food.

A few pics from our stroll through City Centre:

Stefan Stambolov Square

Jay in the Stadium of Philippopolis. At one time it seated up to 30,000 people!

Jay and Milyo the "Crazy"

As much as we enjoyed the main City Centre and the Kapana Art District, it was hard not to fall in love with Old Town. We had a great time staying in a small guest house for three nights. It was our first time using Airbnb and we'll definitely do it again.

Hisar Kapia Gate built in the 11th century

French poet Lamartine's house

My favourite restaurant of the trip was XIX Век. Although it's not too far off the main path, it's well-hidden on a side street behind a larger building.

We shared an order of sach called Вълче мезе (wolf meze): sausage, chicken, pork, peas, carrots, corn, and lots of potatoes. This was also the first place we sampled the local wine. Delicious!
